The Democrat and Chronicle did its best to create sympathy for the $200 "school supply" giveaway, with a front-page whitewash on Friday and online apologias over the weekend.
Maybe the money really went for school supplies. If it did, we'll have another front page story. On the other hand, maybe there was a big spike in sales of cigarettes, booze and consumer electronics. In that case you won't see anything about it in the D&C.
Almost all the online commenters on the D&C website were against the handout. My fave? This one:

Here's how you buy soap, underwear and towels for your kids - get a job and buy them with your own money. Or hey - here's an idea - stop having kids you can't afford with men you don't marry.

On second thought, make it $2,000. A bargain at twice the price.
